One of the world's most popular comic book heroes, Tintin makes his on stage debut in Mumbai, with a new play from Akvarious Productions

The idea of an actor playing Captain Haddock mouthing those incredulous insults has got us excited about Akvarious Productions' newest children's play, The Adventures of Tintin. Two comic books -- Seven Crystal Balls and Prisoners Of The Sun -- form the skeletal structure of the play, which also includes episodes from several other books. The play premieres today as part of the Summertime Festival at Prithvi Theatre.

"For a long time, I've been thinking about working on a play that would bring a sense of adventure and some action on stage. I did not want to shy away from a gun or sword fight. That's when I thought of adapting Tintin for stage," says director Akarsh Khurana, while dishing out last-minute instructions for stagehands.u00a0u00a0

This is the fifth children's play by the group, which had previously adapted Wizard of Oz and stories by Ruskin Bond and Enid Blyton. The strategy of working on stories that children from the current generation have hardly heard of but which their parents absolutely adore, seems to be working out for Akarsh and his team.

"There appers to be the pattern that is emerging. Thought, it isn't a conscious decision. We have all delved into our collective childhood memories to try and figure out what worked for us as children. Ruskin Bond, Enid Blyton, Wizard of Oz, Asterix and Obelix and Tintin, is all stuff we've grown up on," says Akarsh.

So go ahead, here's your best excuse to turn into a ten year-old, this summer!

On: May 11 and 26, 4 pm and 7 pm at Prithvi Theatre, Janki Kutir, Juhu Church Road, Vile Parle (W). Call: 26149546 Tickets: Rs 200
