Furious passengers to move court against national carrier following massive flight delays on sunday

Turbulence hits Air India

A passenger recorded the scuffle at Delhi airport on sunday after several flights got delayed by nearly 12 hours; will use it to sue the national carrier

What would be the reaction of hundreds of air travellers when their flights are delayed by up to 12 hours with little or no explanation forthcoming from the airline management? No need to strain your mind's eye.

It's all there on Youtube. Mumbai-based photographer Aneesh Bhasin recorded the chaos and disorder at the swanky T3 terminal of Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) on Sunday night that continued till next morning.

The video captures passengers, many of whom have now decided to move court against the national carrier, infuriated by the seemingly unending ordeal.

Bhasin, who travelled with the airline twice within a week, had a harrowing experience to relate.
"I was travelling with Air India to Hong Kong from Mumbai via Delhi from AI-310. First the flight was late and when we reached there we were told that the luggage was missing. According to airlines policy they promised to pay 500 Hong Kong dollars which they never gave. Then while returning on November 7 the flight started one hour late from Hong Kong and reached Delhi at 9:30 pm," he said.

At that very point at the IGIA all the Air India flights had been affected; worse still no one was available with any information. "After reaching Delhi airport there was no information about our flight back to Mumbai. Passengers protested but no official came to our aid. My flight was supposed to take off from Delhi airport for Mumbai at 11:30 pm but there was no information.

I recorded the scene at the airport. At 1:10 am a senior manager came to talk to us but he could not justify the reason behind the delay. Finally Pankaj Kumar, GM, Air India, arrived, and he himself started organising things. After an endless wait we boarded the flight to Mumbai at 4:15 am," said Bhasin.

The apathy on the part of the airlines has compelled passengers to move the consumer court asking for justification.

Sunday night madness
On Sunday evening, hundreds of furious passengers at Delhi airport overpowered officials and started shouting anti-airlines slogan on the microphone.

Chaos broke out at Terminal 3 of the Indira Gandhi International Airport as large number of passengers angered by delays in Air India flights raised slogans against the national carrier. Angry passengers even took over the microphone at the public announcement system room near Gate no. 24.

The problem started at around 8 pm when late night passengers started reaching the airport and got no information about their flights.

Furious passengers overpowered officials there and started shouting anti airlines slogan on the microphone. The situation was brought under control after the Central Industrial Security Force personnel intervened.

The Other Side

There are two reasons for the delay as we are facing a problem of non-availability of parking space at the T3 which is causing delay in flight movement. Moreover due to the heavy traffic and absence of staff during the festive season has caused some glitches in the baggage handling.
