Two special squads of the city police crime branch detained two persons suspected to be involved in robbing a 1.5 kg gold idol of Lord Ganesha worth Rs 50 lakh from a temple in Diveagar in Raigad district on March 24.
During the attack, one of the two security guards was killed and one of the miscreants’ faces was captured on a CCTV camera at the temple.

Additional commissioner of police (crime) Anant Shinde said, “Our two teams led by police inspectors Sunil Pawar and Sunil Tambe detained two people on Tuesday morning, who are suspected to be involved in the theft case of a gold idol from a Ganesha temple in Diveagar from a village called Ghospuri in Ahmednagar district.”
Shinde added that the duo was detained after a study of the CCTV footage revealed that one detainee resembled the person captured by the camera. He further said that the teams were interrogating the suspects to ascertain their involvement in the theft and refused to divulge any further information.
“It will be difficult to disclose the names of the suspects as the idol is still to be recovered,” Shinde said.
A source in the crime branch identified one of the suspects as Kailas Bijya Bhosale, who resembles the person seen in the CCTV grab. He further said on a condition of anonymity that Khairabai Bhosale, who was also a suspect in the case, managed to give the police the slip at the village.u00a0
