Younis scalp fuels New Zealand hopes

New Zealand snared the crucial wicket of Younis Khan on the fifth day of the second Test against Pakistan Wednesday to give the Black Caps renewed hope of a series-levelling victory.

Younis (81) had combined with Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq (37) for a 118-run partnership before edging a Tim Southee delivery to wicketkeeper Reece Young on the last ball before tea.

The pair, who anchored Pakistan's first innings, came together with the side reeling at 42-3 as they chased a fourth innings target of 274 for a win that would give them a 2-0 series win.

New Zealand still need to take six wickets in the final session to avenge a humiliating 10-wicket defeat in the first Test in Hamilton and will hope the Younis dismissal sparks a collapse.

Earlier, New Zealand made a perfect start when Tim Southee trapped Taufeeq Umar lbw for a first ball duck in the second over.

Chris Martin then dismissed Azhar Ali (10) lbw in the 11th over and induced a thick edge to the slips from Mohammad Hafeez (32) in his next over.

Pakistan need only a draw to claim the series 1-0.
