The Mumbai police will now have its own brigade of Force One commandos trained on the lines of National Security Guard (NSG).
The first batch of 350 commandos are likely to be selected and trained in the next six months. Commissioner of Police Hasan Gafoor told MiD DAY that the Chief Minister has given the nod to the formation of the force. The unit will be headed by an officer of the rank of additional commissioner of police.
The rigorously trained and highly motivated commandos are expected to be armed with AK 104 assault rifles, MP-5s, OSV 96 heavy sniping rifles, Galil Sniper and Negev Light Machine Guns used by the NSG and Navy's Marine Commandos.
Two helicopters are being requisitioned for swift movement of commandos across the state. The unit will be backed by information provided by the State Intelligence Department.
Mumbai police are looking forward to recruiting youth with high physical capabilities, police sources said. A senior police officer said the assault teams are likely to be split into groups of 10 men led by an inspector of police and followed by a sub-inspector. The heavily armed units will be commanded by a deputy commissioner of police trained at the NSG centre.
