It looks like an awakening is happening once again.
The Jaago Re! One Billion Votes campaign got one lakh registrations on Sunday. This has happened within nine weeks of the launch of the website, making this perhaps India's fastest growing voter registration campaign ever.
As of now, Mumbai leads the campaign by contributing 20 per cent of the total registrations on the site. The campaign aims at awakening the youth of India to participate in the democratic process by registering to vote.
The campaign revolves around the website â www.jagore.com which covers voter registration needs of citizens in 35 cities across the country. Currently, the campaign is conducting activities in 11 cities and will soon spread to 35 cities.
The activities comprise talks, presentations and on-the-spot voter registration drives, which kicked of on November 18 at Infosys and Wipro campuses in Bangalore. Thirty institutions have confirmed their participation including St Xavier's, Mumbai, and Symbiosis, Pune.
Jaago Re! gets institutions to engage all employees or students to participate in the campaign, and, in turn, become 100 per cent voter-registered institutions.
Jaago Re! is a non-partisan nationwide movement launched by Janaagraha and Tata Tea to awaken and enable the citizens of India, especially the youth, to participate and register to vote. The mission is to register the country (one billion voters) to vote in the next five years, in order to ensure a better Indian democracy. |
