On May 13, 2013, Himanshu Ranka and his accomplice Vijesh Sanghvi reportedly kidnapped 13-year-old Aditya Ranka, Himanshu’s cousin after they lost money while betting on IPL matches. Sources say they had lost Rs 6lakhs.
In order to give direction to his plan, Himanshu called Aditya to go for a ride with him in his friend’s new Honda City car. The car was borrowed by Sanghvi from one of his friends. It is believed that Himanshu knew that Aditya’s diamond merchant father was going to receive Rs 30 lakh that day.
As per a statement by the Mumbai Police Additional Commissioner, Krishna Prakash, the duo hit the boy on the head, rendering him unconscious. Himanshu then allegedly returned to Aditya’s house in order to keep an eye on the actions of the family. In the meanwhile Sanghvi made the ransom call to Aditya’s father
When Jitendra Ranka, Aditya’s father, received the first call for ransom he thought it was a joke. But when Aditya did not return home by 6pm that evening, the family immediately went to VP Road police station.
As per Krishna Prakash, Himanshu even visited the police station with the family. When he found out that the case would be handled by the Crime Branch, he panicked and called Sanghvi. The duo then reportedly decided to kill Aditya and bought a blade and matchbox. Vijesh took the boy to Raigad, near the banks of Amba River. He slashed the boy's wrist with a knife and stabbed him in the chest and stomach, and also hit his head with a rock. He laid the injured victim on the ground and set him on fire. However, as he had limited fuel, the boy was still alive. Sanghvi later dumped his body near Panvel on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway.
The police say that Himanshu was planning the boy’s murder from the Friday before the murder took place, when they lost a large sum of money while betting on IPL matches.
It was Jitendtendra Ranka, the boy’s father who asked the police to confront Himanshu as he had found the boy’s shoes in Himanshu’s car. The same car that he had nonchalantly driven to the police station. On being confronted by the police, Himanshu broke down and confessed that the kidnapping and murder of Aditya was indeed his doing along with his friend Sanghvi
As of today, a Sessions Court acquitted Himanshu Ranka for the 2013 abduction and murder of his cousin, Aditya Ranka, 13, the son of diamond merchant Jeetendra Ranka. The court cited lack of evidence as the reason for Himanshu's acquittal. However, his friend Vijesh Sanghavi was convicted for the crime.
