Haldwani Violence: Eyewitness, victim recounts horrific incident that claimed 4 lives

Security has been stepped up in Banbhoolpura area of Uttarakhand’s Haldwani after violence broke out. An anti-encroachment drive was carried out on February 08 after which violence broke out in the area. So far, 4 persons killed, and over 100 policemen sustained injuries in the Haldwani violence. Four companies of paramilitary forces were rushed to the city to maintain the law and order situation. District Magistrate has imposed a curfew in Banbhoolpura and issued shoot-at-sight orders. Many vehicles including cars, motorcycles were set ablaze during the violence on February 08. Internet Services have been suspended and educational institutions have been closed in the district. Uttarakhand Police has also requested the Home Ministry to send additional paramilitary forces. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami urged locals to maintain the law and order in district.

Hollywood star, Angelina Jolie, who is also a refugee advocate, has lambasted Pakistan as deep concern is rising about the survival of Afghan refugees leaving Pakistan. In an Instagram post, she said she was “saddened they would so abruptly push back refugees who face the impossible realities of trying to survive in today’s Afghanistan, where women have again been deprived of all rights and the possibility of education, many are being imprisoned, and there is a deep humanitarian crisis.” Terming Pakistan’s move of expelling “yet another example of the backsliding in human rights global”, Jolie said that his is a new tragedy in the long history of the suffering of Afghan people.

On Tuesday, 17 October 2023, a five-judge Supreme Court (SC) bench refused to grant legal recognition to same-sex marriages. The bench had assembled to pronounce verdicts on pleas seeking legal validation for same-sex marriage. Supreme Court Bar Association president Adish Aggarwala while talking to the media, said, "I welcome the decision of the Supreme Court where they have not allowed same-sex marriage".

Union government has constituted a ‘One Nation, One Election’ Committee on September 1. The committee has been formed under the chairmanship of former President Ram Nath Kovind. Committee will explore the possibility which envisages holding of general, states polls simultaneously. CEC Rajiv Kumar said that EC is ready to conduct elections as per legal provisions. Earlier, AIMIM Chief Owaisi rejected the possibility of ‘One Election’ Bill and called it “unconstitutional”. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on several occasions pitched the idea of One Nation, One Election.

With a week remaining to the release of Amit Rai-directed 'OMG 2', the makers have dropped the trailer of the film giving an insight into the theme of 'OMG 2'. In the first part, released in 2012, Paresh Rawal's atheist character was seen taking up a case against God after his shop gets destroyed following an earthquake. In OMG 2 trailer, a devotee played by Pankaj Tripathi fights a legal battle against his son's school. The OMG 2 trailer begins with Lord Shiva telling Nandi, the bull to send a trusted aide to earth to help his devotee as he will soon be faced with a big problem. We are introduced to Pankaj Tripathi as Kantisaran Mudgal and his son. While not much is revealed, we get a hint that his son does something he is not supposed and it also involves a shocking video of the act. While Kantisaran condemns his son, he decides to fight for him and takes up a case against the school. Yami Gautam plays a lawyer who fights the case on behalf of the school in OMG 2 trailer. Akshay Kumar as Lord Shiva comes to Kantisaran's aide. Like the previous film, in this film as well, he pretends to be human while being aware of his Godly self. Nuh’s Sahara Family Restaurant was razed under the demolition drive which was carried out under heightened security. This demolition drive came after clashes were reported in Nuh on July 31. Clashes broke out between two groups in Nuh after a procession passing through the district came under attack.

Reacting to Mamata Banerjee’s statement on his movie ‘Kashmir Files’ Vivek Agnihotri on May 09 said that he sent the Chief Minister a legal notice regarding the same. He said, “Yesterday Mamata Banerjee said that 'The Kashmir Files' and my upcoming film which is based on the genocide in Bengal, are propaganda. She said that BJP funds me for the films I make. We have sent a legal notice to CM Mamata Banerjee against the statements she made.”
