The Central Government has extended the last date for filing appeals before the Goods and Services Tax Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT) to July 31, 2026, providing taxpayers with an additional month to submit their appeals.
According to an official statement issued by the Ministry of Finance on Tuesday, the extension applies to appeals filed under Section 112(1) read with Section 112(3) of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) law.
Earlier, through a notification dated September 17, 2025, the Government of India (GoI) had fixed June 30, 2026, as the deadline for filing appeals before the GST Appellate Tribunal.
The Ministry, while issuing the official statement about revising the last dates for appeals made at the GST Tribunal, said that the decision to extend the due date was taken after receiving representations from various stakeholders. The stakeholders, however, pointed out some of the technical difficulties arising from the surge in filings on the GSTAT portal as the deadline approached.
According to the official statement, despite the deadline having been announced well in advance, the portal witnessed a sharp spike in activity during the final days. According to the official statement by the Ministry of Finance, nearly 30,000 appeals were filed in the last 15 days alone, with the highest daily filing volume reaching 5,500 appeals.
Highlighting further the revised dates for filing appeals at the Goods and Services Tax Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT), the Government said that the extension is intended to ease pressure on the online filing system and provide taxpayers with adequate time to complete the appeal process without facing technical disruptions.
The Ministry of Finance also urged taxpayers not to wait until the last moment to submit their appeals. It advised eligible appellants to plan and file their appeals well before the revised deadline of July 31, 2026, to avoid last-minute congestion on the GSTAT portal.
Moreover, the extension is expected to benefit businesses and taxpayers who were unable to complete their filings due to heavy traffic on the portal while ensuring smoother functioning of the GST appellate mechanism.
