Planning to invest in stock market? Having a demat account is mandatory if you want to hold shares of a company in both the primary and secondary markets.

What is a demat account?

Demat stands for dematerialisation, which converts physical stock certificates into electronic records for digital trading. Think of it like your savings bank account - only instead of money, it contains shares.

Demat simplifies stock market transactions allowing investors to buy or sell seamlessly. Moreover, it also enables direct credit of dividends and bonus shares making it convenient for investors.

Introduced by Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), demat replaced the paper-based system which helped to reduce manual errors, lower the transaction costs, and provide faster trade updates. It also allows investors to maintain their stock portfolio securely, as it is not prone to damage unlike its paper counterpart.

How to open a demat account?

Anyone above the age of 18 can open a demat account. Demat is managed by depository participants under national securities depository limited (NSDL) and central depository services limited (CDSL).

So, the first step should be to conduct basic research on depository participants. Compare the services offered by banks, brokerage firms, financial institutions based on the transaction cost, account opening fees, and annual maintenance charges. Based on other customer's feedback, evaluate the quality of service provided, how quickly do they resolve an issue, and is their platform compatible with mobile and desktop.

Next, you need to keep your documents ready. It is mandated to provide your PAN card, so ensure that your PAN card is linked to your Aadhaar card. Apart from the PAN card, you need to provide an identity proof such as passport, driving license, or voter ID.

You also need to provide your bank details, so a cancelled cheque or bank statement is required. For address proof, documents confirming your current address is necessary, so this could be your Aadhaar card, bank statement, rental agreement, and utility bills. These documents are necessary for know your customer (KYC), which is a mandatory step before activating a demat account.

Then, you need to fill out the application form provided by your chosen depository participant. Ensure to provide the correct personal and financial details. The depository will verify the documents and if the details are in order, then it will process your application.

Upon this, you will receive your demat account and login credentials. Using this you can start trading on the stock market.
