Sebi has revamped its document number verification system by adding the subject matter of the regulator's letter as a mandatory field to authenticate physical letters and notices.
The regulator said the revamped facility will strengthen the authentication of regulatory communications.
Launched in April 2025, the facility also aligns with the outward number format generated through the outward module of Sebi's e-office system.
By accessing the system, recipients can verify whether a Sebi letter, including notices and show-cause notices, was issued by the market watchdog by validating their credentials and entering the mandatory outward number, the name of the issuing official, the date, the subject matter, and the recipient's name.
Such verification does not constitute a verification of the contents of the letter, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) said in a statement on Thursday.
If the details entered match Sebi's records, the system will confirm that the regulator issued the letter or communication and if the details do not match, the system will indicate that no record is found.
Further, the verifier should enter the correct details or seek confirmation by emailing Sebi at dnvs@sebi.gov.in.
The revamped facility has been operational since September.
Sebi said any communication issued prior to the said period may be verified by the recipient by sending an e-mail with necessary details to dnvs@sebi.gov.in.
The document number verification system continues to be available on the home page of the Sebi's website.
