Digital Personal Loan.
India's personal loan market is seeing an interesting change. Borrowers are increasingly comfortable applying online, and the growth is coming from well beyond the country's largest cities.
According to the Fintech Association for Consumer Empowerment's Digital Personal Loans report, digital NBFCs sanctioned around 3.4 crore personal loans worth Rs 64,656 crore during April to June 2026. These lenders accounted for 70% of personal loan sanction volumes during the quarter.
There is another number that matters for loan DSAs. Around 58% of the sanction value went to customers below 35 years of age, while approximately 40% came from Tier III cities and beyond.
For a DSA, this changes the customer map. The next borrower looking for a digital personal loan may be younger, based in a smaller city and comfortable beginning the loan journey on a phone. The way DSAs find and speak to such customers may therefore need to change as well.
Digital NBFCs sanctioned loans with an average ticket size of Rs 18,802 in Q1 FY27. The figure was considerably lower than the Rs 70,025 average for other NBFCs and Rs 4.52 lakh for banks.
This gives DSAs an important clue about demand. A large part of digital borrowing is linked to relatively smaller credit requirements. Customers may be looking for money for an immediate expense, purchase, travel, education cost or another personal requirement.
The market is also becoming more diverse. Sanction value for borrowers below 25 grew 104% year on year during Q1 FY27. Growth was also strong outside major urban centres, with Tier III and beyond recording a 58% increase in sanction value.
For DSAs, the opportunity is therefore wider than simply waiting for traditional salaried borrowers from metro cities to enquire.
If a meaningful share of digital lending demand is emerging from Tier II, Tier III and smaller markets, lead generation should reflect that.
DSAs can consider local digital campaigns, regional social media communities and referral networks within the areas they serve. A financial distribution platform can also help advisors explore financial products without depending entirely on a single lender or lead source.
Smaller markets can be particularly relationship-driven. One satisfied borrower can lead to enquiries from colleagues, relatives or local business networks. Building trust after the first transaction can therefore be as important as generating the original lead.
A customer in their twenties or early thirties may start researching a loan long before speaking to an advisor.
They could compare eligibility requirements, interest rates or EMI expectations online before submitting an enquiry. DSAs therefore, need to be visible during this research stage.
Short educational posts, WhatsApp updates and simple explanations around eligibility, documents, repayment and credit scores can help. The purpose is not to push every enquiry towards an application. It is to make the DSA useful before the customer has selected a lender.
Speed and clarity are the key points that you should consider in digital loans. A borrower searching for a digital loan may already expect a quick process. So, you must be able to share everything needed at the start.
DSAs can make communication easier by explaining the key details upfront:
You should share the common reasons of rejection too, as this will make the process smooth.
Language can also make a difference. Customers in non-metro markets may be more comfortable discussing financial products in a regional language or in simpler terms. A highly technical explanation can create distance even when the product itself is suitable.
The growth of digital lending does not mean every lead should immediately become an application.
Borrowers served by digital NBFCs have varied credit profiles. The FACE data shows that digital lenders serve customers across different risk categories, including people with relatively short credit histories.
This increases the value of preliminary lead assessment.
Before discussing a particular loan, a DSA can understand the customer's income, existing EMIs, repayment capacity, bureau history and actual borrowing requirement. This can help identify more suitable options and avoid sending the same application across multiple lenders without proper assessment.
DSAs looking to expand their lending business can also explore opportunities to sell loan products across customer segments while keeping suitability and eligibility at the centre of the conversation.
Digital lending makes it easier for customers to apply directly. That does not remove the role of a DSA. It changes where the value of that role lies.
A younger borrower may not need someone merely to fill in an application. They may need help understanding whether they qualify, which lender may suit their profile, why one offer costs more than another and what a rejection could mean for the next application.
The same applies to customers in smaller cities. Access to a digital personal loan may be improving, but access to clear financial guidance is equally important.
DSAs who combine digital sourcing with proper customer conversations may therefore be better placed to serve this growing market.
The Q1 FY27 numbers show that digital personal lending is spreading across age groups, geographies and borrower profiles. Digital NBFCs are already handling large volumes, while younger customers and borrowers outside metros are becoming an increasingly important part of the market.
For DSAs, the opportunity is to follow the customer. That means looking beyond familiar sourcing channels, communicating in a simpler way and assessing every enquiry before moving towards an application.
As the digital loan market expands, DSAs who understand these changing borrower expectations can build stronger customer relationships and a more sustainable lending business.
The main reason why people are using digital personal loans more are easy access and reach.
DSA can find the customer in the tier II and III cities via online platforms or with the help of connections.
Yes. People still need to DSA to understand the loan guidelines and support with quicker application.
A DSA should check the eligibility, documents, and also credit history before the application is submitted.
DSA can get continued and repeat business when they offer support, maintain clear communication, and ensure everything is in place.
