Ancient warriors return through reincarnation. Forgotten oaths become the foundation of present-day conspiracies. A battle that began thousands of years ago resurfaces amid geopolitical tensions stretching from the Himalayas to the world's centres of power.
The authors describe the novel as an attempt to create an entirely new genre within Indian commercial fiction-where mythology, geopolitics and espionage converge with the pace, research and cinematic scale of an international thriller.
"India possesses one of humanity's greatest civilisational epics," says Ajit Menon. "Yet many young readers know our mythology only through summaries, short videos or television adaptations. We wanted to create a thriller that speaks the language of Gen Z-a story that entertains first, inspires next, and ultimately encourages readers to discover the original Mahabharata for themselves. Anil Verma believes Indian storytelling has reached an inflexion point.

The novel introduces an expansive fictional universe in which Arjuna's final responsibility after the Kurukshetra War was not merely to protect a kingdom but to safeguard an ancient divine covenant entrusted to his immortal son, Iravan, and linked to the goddess Kuluta Mata. When that sacred covenant is broken in modern India, forgotten enemies return, ancient prophecies awaken and reincarnated heroes once again find themselves on opposing sides of a conflict whose outcome could determine the future of civilisation itself.
Unlike conventional mythological fiction, the story is firmly anchored in present-day geopolitics. Intelligence agencies, covert military units, cyber warfare, cross-border conspiracies and emerging global conflicts become integral to the narrative, creating a world where mythology and modern statecraft collide.
The novel also reflects its commitment to younger audiences through its visual identity. In a deliberate creative decision, the cover has been designed by Anushka Menon, a second-year student of Fashion Communication and Styling at ISDI - Atlas Skill Tech University. Rather than commissioning an established commercial designer, the authors chose someone from Gen Z to interpret the Mahabharata through a contemporary visual language. The collaboration reflects the philosophy behind the project-that India's oldest stories can inspire its youngest generation when presented in a language they recognise and connect with.
The book further distinguishes itself with illustrated mythology maps, detailed character lineages, reincarnation charts and an expansive world-building framework, reinforcing the authors' ambition to create a franchise-ready literary universe.
Scheduled for release in September 2026, Pandavas - The Warriors of Dharma is envisioned as the opening chapter of the Pandavas Universe, with future novels expanding its mythology, characters and geopolitical landscape.
For Ajit Menon and Anil Verma, however, the novel's success will not be measured only by copies sold.
