Actor and lawyer Davy Grewal is steadily carving a distinctive path across Punjabi cinema, Bollywood, theatre and the legal profession. From earning recognition with the popular Punjabi web series Yaar Jigree Kasooti Degree to being part of Sandeep Reddy Vanga's Animal, the actor has embraced diverse opportunities while continuing to balance his legal practice alongside his acting career.For Davy, Yaar Jigree Kasooti Degree remains one of the most significant milestones of his career. It was his first break in the Punjabi industry and introduced him to audiences not only across Punjab but also internationally, particularly in Canada and the United States.While he did not reprise his role in the film adaptation, he says the decision was based on certain professional circumstances and was one he felt was right for him at the time. Looking back, he believes that sometimes an opportunity not working out can ultimately lead to something better. 'Davy shares', "Yaar Jigree Kasooti Degree was my first break in the Punjabi industry. It gave me recognition not just in Punjab but internationally as well. I started getting the same kind of audience in Canada and America because of the show."
Even after the film's release, the actor continues to receive messages from audiences asking why he was not part of the film and expressing their desire to see him continue the character. "As an artist, the audience is the most important thing. I feel very happy that people still remember and want to see me in that role. Whatever happened professionally, I don't hold anything against anyone. Everyone has their own journey and professional decisions," 'he adds.'
His next major turning point came with Animal, which exposed him to a much wider audience and gave him the opportunity to work alongside Ranbir Kapoor and director Sandeep Reddy Vanga. "Whatever opinions people had about Animal, being part of a film of that scale was a very big experience for me. I got the opportunity to work with Ranbir Kapoor, who is someone I always wanted to work with. When someone once asked me which star I would like to work with, I had said Ranbir Kapoor, and eventually I got that opportunity," 'Davy says'.
He is also keen to explore physically demanding roles, having already worked in a Punjabi gangland film that featured a hand-to-hand combat sequence. With Animal Park and other projects potentially on the horizon, the actor is looking to build a filmography that allows him to constantly push his creative and physical boundaries. Interestingly, acting is only one part of his professional identity. "I have never really seen the two professions as completely different. Both have taught me a lot about people and society. As an actor, you learn from your surroundings and constantly observe people. As a lawyer, you meet different people every day, understand different situations and observe their body language. All of this becomes useful for an actor as well," he explains.
His artistic journey has also taken him beyond India. In Norway, he has performed theatre for audiences with limited exposure to Punjabi and Hindi theatre. His first international performance was a solo play, which required him to introduce audiences to the idea of theatre and build an interest in the medium. With acting, theatre and law continuing to occupy different but interconnected spaces in his life, the actor is now looking ahead to a diverse slate of opportunities. Among them is an upcoming association with a travel company for a Sri Lanka tour, where he will travel alongside audiences as part of a celebrity-led travel experience.
