The absence of a DJ did little to dampen the festive mood at Lal Mahal Chowk, where Punit Balan Group's Dahi Handi celebration attracted a huge gathering and turned the area into a hub of traditional music and Govinda activity.
The event brought together 31 prominent Ganesh mandals and featured a mix of Dahi Handi competition and cultural performances. The defining moment arrived when the Shivtej Govinda Troop completed a seven-tier human pyramid and broke the handi. The successful attempt won the team a cash prize of Rs 1.11 lakh.
The celebration followed a clear traditional theme. Instead of the amplified tracks normally associated with large festival gatherings, the organisers used live dhol-tasha, halgi and pakhawaj performances. The combination of percussion and the chants of the crowd created an atmosphere that remained lively throughout the event.
The cultural programme added further variety. Prabhat Band performed at the beginning, followed by traditional musical presentations involving dhol-tasha groups, Shiv Vadya, pakhawaj and halgi artists. The performances were aimed at keeping Maharashtra's cultural heritage at the centre of the occasion.
Women's lezim teams brought another visual attraction to the programme, while Mardani Khel demonstrations offered spectators a glimpse of traditional martial arts. Warkari cultural presentations contributed devotional elements to the evening.
The presence of 31 participating mandals made the event a collective celebration. Govinda teams came together under one platform, while families, local residents and festival-goers filled the surrounding area to witness the programme.
For the organisers, the DJ-free format was not simply a sound decision but a statement about the way festivals can be celebrated. The aim was to replace high-volume electronic entertainment with live traditional music and performances without compromising on the scale or excitement of the occasion.
Punit Balan said the response from the public was a positive indication that traditional forms of celebration continue to have strong appeal. He emphasised the cultural significance of Dahi Handi and Ganeshotsav and the importance of keeping Maharashtra's traditions visible during major public festivals.
The group has also pointed to growing support for DJ-free celebrations, with organisers stating that more than 200 Ganeshotsav groups have chosen to move away from DJ music during the festival season.
The Lal Mahal event ultimately brought together competition, culture and community participation. With the Shivtej Govinda Troop's seven-tier achievement serving as the sporting highlight, the celebration demonstrated that a festival can generate considerable public excitement through traditional music and collective participation.
