Shri Pankaj Bhujbal, Hon. Trustee, Mumbai Educational Trust (MET) , Dr. Priya Menon Nair, Director, MET Institute of Mass Media (IMM)

A landmark moment unfolded at the Mumbai Educational Trust (MET)- Institute of Mass Media (IMM) when the institution received a prestigious World Record certification from the Global Book of Records, England. The recognition was for creating a first-of-its-kind sustainable trophy made entirely from recycled electronic waste. Standing at 9.5 feet and weighing 350 kilograms, the trophy symbolizes innovation, environmental responsibility, and MET's commitment to application-based education.

To shed light on the academic vision behind this ambitious initiative, Shri Pankaj Bhujbal, Honourable Trustee, Mumbai Educational Trust (MET), and Dr. Priya Menon Nair, Director, MET Institute of Mass Media (IMM), shared their perspectives with Mid-day's associate. Here are the excerpts of the interaction.

What motivated the institution to undertake a project of such magnitude?

Shri Pankaj Bhujbal:

Our goal was to provide students with opportunities to learn beyond textbooks and traditional classroom limits. True creativity emerges when young minds are challenged with real-world problems, and sustainability is one of the most pressing issues of our time. The idea of creating a giant trophy from e-waste was both symbolic and impactful. It allowed students to combine innovation, responsibility, and craftsmanship in a single project. Their enthusiasm and ownership reinforced our belief that meaningful change begins when students are empowered to explore big ideas.

How did it feel to hear about the World Record confirmation from the Global Book of Excellence?

Shri Pankaj Bhujbal:

Receiving the news was immensely fulfilling. It made me proud of the entire MET community because the recognition reflects the collective dedication of our students, faculty, and mentors. I also attribute this achievement to the vision of our Honourable Founder Chairman, Mr. Chhagan Bhujbal, whose commitment to empowering young minds through quality education has always guided us. The joy on the students' faces when the certificate was presented was priceless. This victory belongs to them - a moment they created and will cherish forever.

Dr. Priya, what academic challenges did students face?

Dr. Priya Menon Nair:

The biggest challenge was coordination. Students from diverse specialisations - media strategy, production, design, communication, aesthetics, and fabrication - had to collaborate effectively despite differing perspectives and work styles. They managed creative differences, tight timelines, technical constraints, and environmental challenges during construction. Despite these hurdles, they handled pressure with maturity and made a complex project appear seamless. This experience strengthened their collaboration, adaptability, and interdisciplinary problem-solving skills, preparing them for future professional challenges.

How does the Trophy Project represent MET's long-term educational philosophy?

Shri Pankaj Bhujbal:

MET aims to create leaders, not just graduates. Bold thinkers who innovate fearlessly and contribute to society. This initiative exemplifies MET's values of creativity, sustainability, teamwork, and community focus. Using discarded materials to craft a work of art symbolizes transformation - a core principle of MET's mission. Education at MET empowers learners to inspire change, and this project is a testament to that vision.

Dr. Priya, how did mentorship shape the outcome of the project?

Dr. Priya Menon Nair:

Our mentorship model was collaborative rather than instructional. Dr. Sumeet Patil and our faculty guided creative and production aspects while ensuring alignment with academic objectives. The students, however, were the true driving force. They demonstrated leadership, responsibility, and mutual support. My role was to guide, encourage, and keep them connected to the larger purpose. Witnessing their professional and emotional growth was truly rewarding and shaped the outstanding outcome.

What would you like to say to the students who executed this project?

Dr. Priya Menon Nair:

What you created means far more than any medal or title. You showed courage, determination, and strong teamwork. You learned to lead, collaborate, and turn challenges into achievements. Whatever the future brings, carry this confidence. You have brought pride to MET, but more importantly, you have established your own identity - something truly priceless.

The World Book of Records recognition celebrates MET Institute of Mass Media (IMM)'s culture of creativity, experiential learning, and student empowerment. The sustainable trophy stands as a symbol of resourcefulness, perseverance, and shared purpose, paving the way for future educational projects that inspire students to imagine, create, and transform the world.
