Rheaa Noor.
In a literary landscape often driven by speed and spectacle, author Rheaa Noor chooses a quieter path. Her latest novel, When Mountains Remember Love, unfolds within the silence of a remote Himalayan monastery, where forgotten murals, hidden histories, and unspoken emotions gradually reveal themselves.
At the heart of the story is Anaya, a mural restorer who retreats to an isolated valley after being denied recognition for her work. What begins as an escape soon becomes a journey of discovery, as the restoration of a centuries-old fresco uncovers long-buried truths and forces Anaya to confront the parts of herself she has spent years trying to silence. Blending literary fiction, mystery, magical realism, and a deeply-emotional sapphic love story, When Mountains Remember Love explores memory, identity, belonging, grief, and the courage required to reclaim one's lost voice.
Book Marketer and Founder of MissBookThief, Asha Seth, describes the novel as "a rare work of literary fiction that trusts silence as much as language. Rheaa Noor creates an immersive world where art, memory, identity, and human connection come together with remarkable grace."

We spoke with Rheaa Noor about the inspiration behind the novel, the symbolism of restoration, and why the mountains themselves became such an important presence in the story.
Q. What first inspired When Mountains Remember Love?
I have always been fascinated by the idea that both people and places carry memories beneath the surface. Sometimes those memories remain hidden for years, waiting for the right moment to emerge. I wanted to explore what happens when someone who has spent much of her life feeling unseen begins uncovering forgotten truths and, through that process, discovers herself again.
Q. Anaya's journey begins with disappointment and professional erasure. Why was that important to the story?
Because recognition is something many people quietly struggle with. Anaya is denied credit for her own contribution, and that experience becomes the catalyst for everything that follows. The novel asks a simple question: when the world refuses to acknowledge who you are, how do you continue believing in yourself?
Q. The damaged mural becomes central to the story. What does it represent?
On the surface, it is a work of art in need of restoration. Beneath that, it represents hidden histories, forgotten voices, and the truths that survive despite attempts to erase them. As Anaya uncovers the mural's layers, she is also discovering parts of herself.
Q. The Himalayan valley feels almost like a character. Was that intentional?
Absolutely! I never imagined the mountains as mere scenery. The valley remembers. It protects secrets. It observes generations come and go. I wanted the landscape to feel alive, as though it was participating in the story rather than simply hosting it.
Q. Readers have noted the sapphic love story woven through the novel. Why was it important to tell that story?
Because love, identity, and belonging are central to the novel. The relationship between Anaya and Tsering is not separate from the story's larger themes. It is another form of hidden history, shaped by silence, longing, memory, and the need to be seen for who we truly are. I wanted that love story to emerge naturally and become part of the emotional fabric of the novel.
Q. Who do you think will connect most deeply with the book?
Readers who enjoy atmospheric storytelling, emotionally-layered characters, and stories where place becomes inseparable from identity. I also think it will resonate with anyone who has ever felt overlooked, underestimated, or disconnected from their own voice.
Q. Ultimately, what does Anaya's journey represent?
On the surface, she is restoring a mural. Underneath, she is restoring herself. The novel is about reclaiming your story after you have been told your contribution does not matter. It is about remembering who you are, when the world has forced you to forget.
