Vastu Is Not About Fear It Is About Awareness

One of the most common questions I am asked is, "Can I find a 100% Vastu-compliant home in Mumbai?" My answer is almost always the same. Probably not. In today's fast-paced metropolitan life, finding the perfect piece of land is difficult enough. Finding a plot that complies with every traditional Vastu principle, and then constructing a perfectly aligned home upon it, is often unrealistic.

Property prices in our cities range from ₹15,000 per square foot to well over ₹2,50,000 per square foot in premium locations. Builders are under constant pressure to maximise utilisation of the land they acquire. Every square foot matters. Every floor matters. Every apartment matters. Their objective is to generate the highest possible return from the available space.

As a result, modern apartment layouts are often driven by commercial realities rather than Vastu principles. This does not mean builders are wrong. It simply means they operate under a different set of priorities. The challenge begins when homeowners assume that all flats within a building are equally suitable for everyone.

Over the years, I have observed that different homes seem to attract different families. Some properties are occupied by people who enjoy excellent health and stability. Others appear to witness recurring health concerns, strained relationships or financial pressures, regardless of who moves in.

Whether one calls it destiny, energy, coincidence or simply life, these patterns are difficult to ignore after visiting hundreds of homes. One particular case remains fresh in my memory. A close friend had owned an apartment for several years and had rented it out to a family. The tenants were comfortable there and had no intention of leaving. However, my friend eventually decided to renovate the property and move in himself. He invited both an interior designer and me to inspect the flat.

The designer had already prepared detailed plans and proposed a renovation budget of nearly ₹15 lakh. All that remained was final approval. As we walked through the property, one feature immediately caught my attention-a bathroom located in the eastern sector of the home. Based on my experience, I advised caution. I explained that while the flat appeared attractive, the layout might not be ideal from a Vastu perspective, particularly if my friend intended to live there for many years.

The designer looked surprised. The tenants seemed happy. The flat was well maintained. Everything appeared perfectly normal. Then something unexpected happened. The lady of the house came to serve us water. Only then did we realise that she was physically challenged and moved with considerable difficulty. The room fell silent.

I am not suggesting that a single architectural feature caused her condition. Life and health are influenced by countless factors. However, moments like these remind me why I continue to study the relationship between people and the spaces they occupy.

Vastu is not about predicting doom. It is not about creating fear. And it is certainly not about convincing people that every challenge in life originates from a building. Rather, Vastu is about understanding how a space may support or hinder the people living within it. For instance, the South-East direction is traditionally associated with the Fire element and the energy of Venus. When this zone is significantly disturbed or reduced, I have often observed challenges relating to family harmony, the functioning of the kitchen and, in some cases, concerns affecting the women of the household.

Similarly, certain placements of toilets, staircases or structural cuts repeatedly appear in homes experiencing recurring difficulties. Do these factors alone determine a person's destiny? No. Human effort, karma, health, lifestyle, relationships and countless unseen factors all play their role. Yet if a simple analysis can help a family avoid a costly mistake before purchasing a home, why ignore it?

The purpose of Vastu is not perfection. Perfection is rare. The purpose is awareness. A good Vastu consultant does not sell fear. He sheds light on possibilities. He helps people understand the strengths and weaknesses of a property before they commit their savings, emotions and future to it.

You may never find a home that is 100% Vastu compliant. But with the right guidance, you can certainly avoid some of the more serious mistakes. After all, Vastu is not meant to frighten you. It is meant to illuminate your path. May Vastu Shastra bring balance, harmony and prosperity into your life. And as I often say,

Vastu Kahe Tathastu
