As digital advertising becomes increasingly crowded and complex, the definition of reaching the "right audience" is also changing. With consumers encountering advertisements across multiple channels and formats, advertisers are looking beyond scale to find more relevant ways of reaching consumers. At the same time, the rise of AI is transforming campaign management, optimisation and decision-making, raising new questions around what technology should automate and where human judgement remains essential.

In an exclusive interaction, Delphin Varghese, Co-founder and Chief Revenue Officer, AdCounty Media, discusses the changing dynamics of digital advertising, the growing importance of relevance and attention, and how AI is reshaping the relationship between marketers and technology partners. He also outlines AdCounty's approach to building an integrated product ecosystem spanning performance advertising, app discovery, programmatic capabilities and publisher monetisation.

Moving Beyond Reach to Relevance

For advertisers, reaching a large audience is no longer necessarily the objective. According to Varghese, the focus needs to shift towards relevance - identifying consumers who have a genuine need for what a brand offers based on factors such as intent, interest, behaviour or the environment in which an advertisement appears.

This also means reconsidering how frequently consumers are exposed to brand messages. While technology makes it possible to target users repeatedly across channels, more targeting does not necessarily mean more effective targeting. A more thoughtful approach, he suggests, is one that prioritises relevance while avoiding excessive messaging.

The same thinking applies to how advertising effectiveness is measured. While impressions, clicks and conversions remain important, these metrics may not fully capture whether an advertisement was actually noticed, perceived or remembered. A consumer may not click on an advertisement but could still recall the message and act on it later.

The opportunity, therefore, is not necessarily to replace existing metrics but to consider attention and business outcomes as distinct signals that can provide a broader understanding of advertising effectiveness.

AI Still Needs Human Judgment

As AI becomes embedded across advertising, the technology can analyse large volumes of data, identify patterns and automate decisions at a speed that human teams cannot match. However, this does not eliminate the need for human judgement.

Questions around what a brand stands for, which audiences it should engage with and what kind of communication is appropriate still require contextual understanding, empathy, cultural awareness and responsibility. Even when an algorithm identifies a creative generating significant engagement, marketers need to assess whether that engagement is aligned with the brand's values and long-term reputation.

Privacy, fairness and transparency also remain areas where human responsibility is critical. AI can make decision-making faster and more efficient, but it does not remove accountability from the people making those decisions.

When AI Becomes Commonplace

With AI tools becoming increasingly accessible, the technology itself may become less of a differentiator. The competitive advantage could instead come from the quality of information a brand possesses and how effectively it acts on that information.

Proprietary data, business understanding, creative thinking and speed of decision-making are becoming increasingly important. Two brands can use similar AI technologies and still achieve different results because of their strategy, positioning and understanding of their target consumers.

AI can help brands create content at scale, but determining which message is worth communicating remains a strategic decision. The combination of technology with a strong understanding of the business and its customers, therefore, becomes increasingly important.

From Automation to Actionable Intelligence

The growing role of AI is also changing what advertisers should expect from their technology partners. Automation, while important, is not necessarily the end goal. Technology can add greater value when it helps marketers understand what is happening within a campaign and determine what action may be required.

For example, rather than simply identifying a decline in campaign performance, an advertising system should be able to analyse the situation and offer suggestions for improvement. As campaigns become more complex across channels, audiences and formats, translating large volumes of information into actionable insights becomes increasingly important.

At the same time, marketers need to understand why a system is making a particular recommendation and what data supports it. This points towards a relationship between marketers and technology partners that is increasingly collaborative rather than purely transactional.

Building an Integrated Product Ecosystem

This approach is reflected in AdCounty's wider product ecosystem. Advertising challenges often overlap: an advertiser may need to improve app discovery, run performance campaigns, reach audiences programmatically and address publisher monetisation.

AdCounty's ecosystem brings together iSearchAds for app discovery and user acquisition, Opsis Pro for performance campaigns, BidCounty for programmatic capabilities and PubFormer for publisher monetisation. The objective is to make these capabilities work more effectively together rather than requiring advertisers to manage each requirement independently.

Within this ecosystem, Opsis Pro focuses on campaign optimisation, targeting, reporting and performance intelligence. The platform is designed to help marketers move from simply reviewing campaign reports towards using campaign intelligence to identify where attention is required and make adjustments more efficiently.

However, automation does not mean accepting every recommendation without scrutiny. Campaign objectives, data quality and the potential impact of decisions still require marketer oversight. The larger opportunity is to reduce the time spent interpreting dashboards and allow marketers to devote greater attention to strategy, creative effectiveness and business outcomes.

Looking Beyond App Installs

iSearchAds addresses another part of the digital advertising journey: app discovery and user acquisition. With a large number of applications competing for visibility, having a useful product does not necessarily ensure that consumers will find it.

The platform focuses on capabilities including keyword discovery, regional keyword insights, competitor analysis and app advertising optimisation. The emphasis extends beyond simply generating installations to understanding search intent, acquisition costs and what users do after installing an application.

This shifts the focus from visibility and installation volumes towards acquiring users who are relevant to the app and understanding the behaviour that follows acquisition.

Connecting the Advertising Journey

Looking ahead, AdCounty's vision is to make these capabilities increasingly connected. Today, marketers often operate across separate platforms for media buying, performance optimisation, app acquisition, audience discovery and publisher monetisation.

The longer-term objective is to enable advertisers to move from one stage of the decision-making process to another more efficiently, without having to navigate multiple disconnected processes. The ecosystem could also make complex advertising intelligence more accessible to companies that may not have large marketing teams.

Ultimately, the focus is on reducing the time advertisers spend managing complexity and giving them more space to understand their customers and create effective campaigns.

As digital advertising continues to evolve, the next phase may therefore be defined not simply by how much technology advertisers have access to, but by how effectively different capabilities, data and intelligence can work together. For AdCounty, the focus is on building that connectivity while keeping human judgement at the centre of the decisions that shape brands and campaigns.
