IIT vs IIM for PGDM Which is Better
When candidates think about management education in India, two names always stand out that is IITs and IIMs. While IITs are famous for engineering, many of them, such as IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT Kharagpur, and IIT Madras, also run highly respected management schools. On the other hand, IIMs, like IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, and IIM Calcutta, are fully dedicated to management studies.
For PGDM Admission 2025, both IITs and IIMs accept admissions mainly through the CAT exam, followed by group discussions, written tests, and personal interviews. The eligibility is also similar as students have to hold a bachelor's degree in any specializations with at least 50% to 60% marks. However, the fee structure of the program differs depending on different institutes such as IIM fees usually ranges between INR 20 to INR 25 lakhs, while IITs keep it lower, generally between INR 10 to INR 15 lakhs.
Choosing between IIT and IIM for an MBA depends on students career goals and background. Students with a technical or engineering background may find IITs more suitable since they combine management with technology, analytics, and innovation. IIMs, on the other hand, are best for those who want to focus on consulting, finance, HR, marketing, and leadership roles, as they are purely business-oriented and carry a strong global brand.
Placements also differ: IITs are strong in analytics, operations, and startups, while IIMs dominate in consulting and finance. Admission cutoffs are usually higher for top IIMs compared to IITs, making IITs slightly more accessible. Both are excellent choices, but IIT is better for tech-driven management and IIM is ideal for business leadership.
Both IITs and IIMs use the CAT exam for admission. However, the cutoff and selection process vary. Apart from CAT, both IITs and IIMs also consider academic record, work experience, and performance in Group Discussions (GD), Written Ability Test (WAT), and Personal Interviews (PI). For PGDM 2025, students must prepare for all these stages.
Placements play an important role when choosing between IIT and IIM for PGDM program 2025. IIMs are known for their strong record in consulting, finance, FMCG, and leadership roles, attracting top recruiters like McKinsey, BCG, Deloitte, HUL, and Goldman Sachs. IITs, on the other hand, perform very well in technology management, analytics, operations, and startups, with recruiters like Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and Tata Group. While average salaries at top IIMs are usually higher, IITs offer excellent opportunities with strong Return On Investment due to lower fees.
