Aamir takes on Javed Akhtar

Angers the veteran by insisting it's the actor and not the lyricist who ensures song's success

At a meeting between producers and writers over the issue of royalties, Aamir Khan got embroiled in a direct confrontation with lyricist Javed Akhtar. Aamir Khan, who was on the side of the producers, clearly stated that a song's popularity depended on the star it was picturised on and not on the lyricist's efforts. This understandably angered Javed who replied that Aamir's Papa Kehte Hain became a big hit even though Aamir was not a star at that time.

However, Aamir stuck to his stand and insisted the actor's contribution is vital to make it a hit, to which Javed Akhtar retorted that what Aamir called 'contribution' was more akin to 'interference'.

The meeting, which was attended by the cream of the film industry, had been called to discuss the central government's recent decision to allow all writers, including lyricists, to claim royalties for their work for a film. Producers and certain stars were reportedly unhappy about the decision. The imbroglio was expected to be sorted out during the meeting, but that did not happen.
