Cold-n't get better

Winters in Mumbai leave model, actor, producer Sushma Reddy highly amused. She can't stop laughing when she sees enthusiastic Mumbaikars donning monkey caps and rubbing their hands together to keep them warm in that stray week of the winter chill.

Though she really wishes that our winters were colder so that she could flaunt her stylish winter wear, as of now she is happy airing her stoles, light cardigans and cashmere shawls as she readies herself for this season:

Warming up
I love this season because it is so pleasant here in Mumbai. This is the best time to don long sleeved tees and light sweaters, jackets and team them up with stoles, scarves and shawls. And the best part is that I can look fashionable without having to worry about catching the winter chill.

But since I travel very frequently to countries that have mild to severe winters, I do have quite an exhaustive winter wardrobe. I own several woollen coats, cardigans, cashmere gloves that come till my elbows, boots, woollen socks, what have you.

Dress to impress
I think winter really is fashion at its best. It's so much fun to see people dressed in beret caps, and boots when you visit cities up North. We Mumbaikars pale in comparison where our winter dressing is concerned because we don't know the art of 'chilling'.

So when we travel to colder places, we sometimes focus more on the practical details than on the fashion. We're so consumed by the idea of keeping ourselves warm that we end up looking like laddoos. But the good part now is that high street stores are offering extensive winter and fall collections as opposed to earlier, so looking good this season has become very easy.

The NY high
My most fashionable winter was in New York in 2007 when I had a blast playing around with my clothes. That was the time when short woollen cardigans were in fashion, so I would team them up with a long tee, skinny jeans and boots.

And there were sales happening everywhere, so I could indulge in some great winter shopping. I feel it is important to build your winter wardrobe over time. Look out for key pieces like smart coats, good quality boots, etc when you're on international trips and don't miss the sales.

And, don't forget to check the labels, because our winter wear is essentially acrylic. The fabric is good till you really get out in the cold. And if you're worried about lugging all that shopping home in a bulky suitcase, buy a few packing cubes that save space.
