She is a rabid entertainer. We met the woman who claims to channel together all the magic created by some of the best musical sorceresses in Bollywood till date through her voice. Hemangini Jhaveri shares her trick of singing in different voices with CS:
Voice experiment
I used to sing in my original voice and performed in several shows until I realised the need to do something new. I was hungry to try something more challenging. That's when I thought, "How about trying to sing a song like Afsanaa Likh Rahee Hoon by Uma Devi (whom we all know as Tuntun) and jump to an Asha Bhonsale number right after it? I would present two diametrically different voices ufffd two singers who were spinning magic by applying different techniques and using totally different areas of the throat. I wanted to bring them together.
On demand
I want to present the entire tapestry of Indian film music to my audience. They should not miss anything at all. It is also a great way of demonstrating the typicality of each singer. The audience loves it. The voices I present are actually my teachers. I know I can never recreate them exactly and I wouldn't even dare to do so! I just pick up the specific quality of their individual voices.
All in one
When I sing and entertain, I try to recreate the environment that has already been established by these singers ufffdu00a0 I want to be all of them at the same time. For instance, no one could have sung Aap Jaisa Koi meri Zindagi Mein Aaye, the way Naziya Hassan did. I try to re-present her to my listeners.
