At Loggerheads: Raja Mukerji and Sunjoy Wadhwa |
The show producers and the channel on which it aired were jointly fined at a title disputes committee meeting held yesterday evening to sort out the matter amicably. The title is registered in the name of Rani Mukerji's brother, Raja Mukerji. While Raja claimed compensation worth Rs 50 lakh, the committee eventually ruled on a Rs 5 lakh fine.
An industry source reveals, "Sunjoy Wadhwa of Sphere Origins requested the Association of Motion Pictures & TV Programme Producers of India (AMPTPP) for the title 'Jyoti' for his new show. The AMPTPP had told Wadhwa that they couldn't give him the title and he had to either change the name of his show or simply put a request to be on the waiting list."
Show me the money! The source further adds, "Wadhwa first aired the promos of the show and eventually, the show even went on air. This got Raja furious and he has filed an official complaint with the association.
The first meeting regarding this dispute was held last week where Wadhwa told Raja that he is ready to pay him an amount as compensation. Raja has an emotional attachment to the name (it's his wife's name) and has gone ahead and asked for Rs 50 lakh as compensation."
An angry Raja says, "I was already working on a script with the title in mind. I was very shocked that these people started the promos and then the show. If they'd have asked me properly and not gone behind my back and started the show, I'd have parted ways with the title. They must be big producers but so am I. This isn't done."
Adds Raja, "I've indeed asked for a compensation. If these people have made a mistake, they are liable to pay for it."
