Lighting is a much-neglected facet in our homes. The sole purpose of a lamp is not to provide illumination; it can actually become a conversation-starter and add some spunk to your home. For some unique lamps in quirky designs, head to the newly-opened store --Belle Lampara --at Koregaon Park, which makes for great window shopping. The name translates to beautiful lamps in Spanish and owners, Parindu and jewellery designer Bansi Mehta, proudly state that their daughter came up with the name. The store offers products mostly imported from Spain and the USA.

"The idea behind the store is to display products that are not commercially available but will contribute to a person's home. The items at the store are what I would have personally picked up to decorate my own home. So, each piece is hand-picked," says Bansi Mehta. She adds that it makes sense to open such a store in the city as Pune has lots of beautiful homes with ample spaces, compared to say a crowded city like Mumbai.

The store displays Murano chandeliers, special Tiffany glass lamps, hanging lamps with artificial flowers and leaves as well as antique lamp posts that will remind you of a bygone era. Be prepared to splurge, though, as the lamps don't come cheap (Rs 4,400 to Rs 1,80,000).

The store appears warm, colourful and artistic. Once you walk up the stairs, you can check out paintings adorning the walls which go well with the lamps. The ever-smiling manager greets you and shows you the range of lamps in various shapes and sizes.

We loved the pure iron chandelier at the end of the room which holds 21 lamps and boasts of floral decorations made of iron. Just beside it was a lamp-post reminiscent of the ones seen in yesteryear black and white movies. Interestingly, it also had a fan attached to it and a marble table in the center.

There were chandeliers shaped like a ship and even a cake, made from water-proof hanging chains. The manager emphasised that their colours will not run out. A couple of lamps were decorated with artificial flowers and plants and were shaped like a cake. We loved the Tiffany glass lamps which come in various designs and sizes.
