It's almost official. Vidya Balan will play Silk Smitha in The Dirty Picture, Ekta Kapoor's biopic on the late bombshell. The script is finally ready and Milan Luthria will direct the film. However, Ekta insists that the film will focus on the real Smitha and not the sleaze she was known for. It will delve behind her screen persona and look into what led to her tragic death. She claims the dancer defied all conventions to become a superstar, thus making her a powerful example of women's empowerment.
Meanwhile, Vidya confirmed that she had been approached for the film, but is yet to take a decision.
Silk Smitha was born Vijayalakshmi to poor parents in Andhra Pradesh. She left her studies to make a career in films. In 1996, her fans were shocked when she was found dead in her apartment.
