Arjun Kapoor in a tete-a-tete about experimenting with roles and his love life, among other things

You seem to be experimenting a lot, as is evident in your choice of films.
The idea has always been to do different characters. I am lucky in that I have been offered a wide variety in such a short time and I have always chosen to go with the flow.

I don't want to work in just one direction. Take for instance, my upcoming film, Finding Fanny. It's about five people who go looking for Fanny but end up learning more about themselves in the process. These are five different characters who can't get along with each other and they end up spending two days together which teaches them a lot about themselves and their relationships.

Do you think that filmmakers today are more open to casting new talent?
I think it began two years ago when we found acceptance in this industry. The fact that I, along with other young actors, have bagged interesting film roles reiterates this. Homi Adajania offered me Finding Fanny after watching Ishqzaade. Filmmakers today seem to be thinking alike in that they realise that audiences are willing to shell out money to watch us. So it's great that the viewers are appreciating our work.

Rumour has it that you are dating Alia Bhatt.
The nature of the profession is such that our love lives will be talked about. I was anyway prepared for these things; it's part and parcel of the profession. We have to deal with it, as long as it doesn't hit you below the belt. I am not the first person who is being linked to someone nor will I be the last. About Alia, we are good friends but rumours have taken our equation to another level altogether. We deny it, but no one is believing it. So you have to surrender yourself to such talk and not let it bother you.

What has helped you survive in this Bollywood?
Well, I am aware that this is a result-driven industry. So things keep changing from Friday to Friday. You are only as good as the box office collection of your last film. This is why I don't take things too seriously. But yes, I take the call on what film I will be a part of, depending on the script. I believe that your choices should be your own and you should not blame other people if things don't turn out well. I have always gone by my own instinct, though I do seek advice from my father and Aditya Chopra. They have a great understanding of the industry.
