Aamir Khan Productions is reportedly all set to make a documentary on the life and journey of President Droupadi Murmu. According to reports, filmmaker and writer Svati Chakravarty Bhatkal will be directing the project.
According to a Variety India report, the documentary will trace President Murmu's remarkable journey from her roots in a small village in Odisha to becoming India's first tribal President as well as the country's second woman to hold the nation's highest constitutional office.
The documentary will chronicle the defining chapters of Murmu's life, including her personal tragedies, challenges and setbacks she overcame to enter public service and eventually take on the presidency. It will also reportedly explore her years in public service, giving a closer look at her resilience and determination that shaped her leadership.
With the latest documentary, Aamir Khan Productions continues its long-standing interest in telling stories rooted in real-life experiences and social change. Over the years, the banner has backed several projects that highlight human stories while encouraging wider conversations on issues of public importance.
Interestingly, the project also reunites Aamir Khan Productions with Svati Chakravarty Bhatkal, who has previously directed Rubaru Roshni, a 2019 documentary anthology produced by Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao. Narrated by Aamir Khan, the documentary explored real-life stories of violence, grief, forgiveness and reconciliation, garnering praise for its empathetic and nuanced storytelling.
Portions of the documentary have reportedly been filmed in Murmu's native village in Odisha to recreate key moments from her early life. Additionally, local actors have been cast to portray different phases of her life. Meanwhile, the makers are expected to combine dramatised recreations with archival material and real locations to show a detailed account of her journey to Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Besides documenting Murmu's personal story, the film will also examine the broader significance of her election as President. Murmu's rise to the highest constitutional office has often been regarded as a watershed moment for tribal communities, women and underrepresented groups, which makes her journey one of the defining political stories.
Notably, back in 2025, Aamir Khan hosted a special screening for his film Sitaare Zameen Par at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
