In her debut film Dev D, Mahie Gill played a rustic girl village girl. In her next, Gulal, she plays a struggling actress called Madhuri and has even done two mujras.

Mahie says, "Everyone saw me as the non-glamorous Paro in Dev D. But in Gulal, I will surprise people. Those who have seen the rushes haven't been able to recognise me."

She has performed elaborate mujras for the songs Chakmak Chakmak and Ranaji in the film. Despite suffering from a bad back injury, she shot for the Ranaji track in a few hours.

"I play Kay Kay's mistress in the film and we had a fight sequence where he pushes me. But he accidentally pushed me hard and I fell back on a beauty parlour chair and hurt myself." After the injury, she shot for both the songs back to back.

"While shooting for Chakmak Chakmak, the pain wasn't so miserable but when it came to Ranaji I was in bad pain.

In between shots, I would sit with ice packs and soothe my back. But I am glad that all the pain doesn't show in the end result."

Mahie wasn't the first choice to play this part. Model Seema Rehmani was the first choice for the role but the Mahie has no qualms about being a replacement.

"It all worked out for me. I joined the unit two days before they went on floor because the girl before me had to back out due to other commitments."
