Papon calls for lasting solutions as Assam reels under devastating floods: 'People deserve to live without fear'

As Assam battles one of its worst floods in six decades, singer Papon is urging governments to look beyond relief measures. According to the Guwahati-born singer, the answer lies in investing meaningfully in long-term solutions.

Speaking to mid-day, Papon said that watching the devastation unfold every year in his home state has been agonising. "It is heart-breaking to see families lose their homes, livelihoods, and everything they have built, in a matter of days," he shared.

While ongoing relief efforts remain the priority, the singer believes the recurring crisis can no longer be viewed as an unavoidable seasonal disaster. He hopes that this year's devastation pushes policymakers to think beyond emergency aid. "While floods have always been a part of our reality, the scale and impact remind us that we need stronger infrastructure and long-term sustainable solutions. I hope we all come together to think about lasting solutions. The people of Assam deserve to live without the fear of rebuilding their lives from scratch every monsoon."
