It really is no surprise that we find ourselves asking these questions today. The pressure to perform via rote learning has become so intense and so commonplace, we find our children unable to cope with the unnecessary stress we pile on them.

In a dog-eat-dog world, we let the percentages and ranks claw into our future generations and make them hollow followers of statistics and trivia that have no application in real life. Do we want them reaching for the noose? Is that what we want for them? B-Town biggies who have been through the grind and survived, show you how...

Kareena Kapoor
Book-smart. Important?

It helps. Education is very important but that does not mean that you have to be a topper. Not everyone can be a 'distinction' student. Be realistic and don't compare yourself to anyone.
Performance pressure?
There was none. Mom (Babita Kapoor) and dad (Randhir) were totally chilled out. Even our teachers never pressured us. They wanted us to get decent marks and get knowledge. And I think Lolo and I have done pretty well for ourselves.
Dealing with stress
The only subject that would make me tense was Math -- I hated it but then, I never got stressed over it. I loved history, English literature and Geography and I did well in those subjects.
Any advice?
Everybody's got his own destiny. I feel instead of mugging and carrying heavy schoolbags, kids should do whatever they want. Even a good conversation with intelligent people can make you gain in knowledge. I am against forced education and that is why I am really glad I was part of 3 Idiots. Students should follow their hearts. No child should be pressured into doing things they don't want.
Educational Qualifications
I studied till 10th standard at Wellhams, Dehradun, a one-year commerce course at Mithibai, studied law at the Government Law Collegeu00a0and then did a computer course in Boston and Harvard for six months.

Akshay Kumar
Book-smart. Important?

It all depends on what you want to be in life. My parents made sure I got an educationu00a0 but they knew I was going to get through life on my physical ability and not my mental capability. My father pushed me to be a karate champion (where my heart was) and mom made sure that I didn't slack off in school and become just a useless hunk of muscle.
Performance pressure?
My parents gave me exactly what I needed in life -- a body and mind to survive it all. Some of my most successful friends are huge not because they have degrees but because they have what it takes to survive the cutthroat world.
Dealing with stress
I never got stressed about anything. You need a strong heart, mind and a dedicated soul to see you through life.
Any advice?
We are a country full of parents pushing their kids into fields of science and medicine. There's a big difference between encouraging your children and pushing them to their limits. We nurture our families more than any country in the world does but we also tend to bring up our children thinking they must provide for the entire family or they will be thrown out of the house. It's too much responsibility for a young mind. I'm now able to provide for so many families and care for all my near and dear ones because my father made me a good man and not because I was an 'A' student. Let's take care of our future generation -- not scare them!
Educational Qualifications
Dropped out from school. I started working from a very young age.

Sonam Kapoor
Book-smart. Important?
Any knowledge is good. We are living in a very competitive world where schools / colleges prepare you for the world. I studied at Arya Vidya Mandir, which had 24 students in each class. So, teachers gave us personal attention.
Performance pressure?
Whenever I would feel stressed, I participated in sports activities. We had a basketball court in school and I'd gather my friends and play whenever I felt bogged down. Commun-icating with your parents is very important, something I always did. You must speak to your parents if you feel pressured in school.
Dealing with stress
I never had to face any stress from school or my parents. In fact, my parents were very happy as long as I worked hard, was well-behaved in class and passed my exams. The teachers like me a lot.
Any advice?
I'd tell the children to be just be happy and speak to their parents. They want the best for their child. If parents don't have time, there are counsellors and helplines available.
Educational Qualifications
HSC. Then I started working.

Katrina Kaif
Book-smart. Important?
Try and find your source of interest in studying what you like -- whether it's reading or practical knowledge.
Performance pressure?
I never had to face any pressure as I didn't study much.
Dealing with stress
I never finished my education but I can understand the pressure they must face. Try and take breaks and meet friends or it can be too
taxing.
Any advice?
Pace your studies and don't leave everything for the last minute. Never be pressured into studying a subject that you won't enjoy -- follow what you believe in.
Educational Qualifications
I couldn't complete my studies as I started working from a young age.

Deepika Padukone
Book-smart. Important?
I was never inclined towards bookish education. But I managed to study well. I was an average student who excelled in extra-curricular activities -- whether they be arts, sports, or music.
Performance pressure?
There was none -- from parents or school. My parents were very supportive and never pressured me to do well in my academic life. My father always said that my profession is my choice. He chose to play badminton at a time when people only thought about becoming lawyers, doctors and engineers.
Dealing with stress
I never had to deal with it.
Any advice?
Never force anybody to take up a profession that he or she cannot excel in. One should be allowed to do what one loves. I was passionate about modelling and acting and my parents let me. It's unfair of parents to live their dreams through their children.
Educational Qualifications
I studied up to class 12 and a am currently doing a correspondence course from the Indira Gandhi University in BA. I have completed my first year.
