Bhagyashree on being paid more than Salman Khan: ‘A woman might put in hard work, but…’

Bhagyashree made her acting debut opposite Salman Khan in Maine Pyar Kiya, directed by Sooraj Barjatya. Reports suggest that Bhagyashree was paid more than Salman for the film. At the time, Salman had only one film to his credit, while Bhagyashree was making her screen debut.

Bhagyashree on getting paid more than Salman Khan

The actress, who was recently seen in Raja Shivaji, recently opened up about the pay structure in Bollywood.

In an interview with Zoom, Bhagyashree was asked about reportedly being paid more than her male co-star in Maine Pyar Kiya, something that remains uncommon even today. Responding to the question, the actress said an actor's remuneration is largely driven by supply and demand.

Speaking about the fee structure in the industry, Bhagyashree said, "I don't know whether people are going to like what I am about to say. It depends on supply and demand. It is a simple business when we talk about money. A woman might put in hard work, but if the producer or director feels she is replaceable by someone else who is offering a better price, then they will stick to the price they are willing to pay that actress."

She added, "At that point, the actress has to decide whether she is willing to let go of the work and allow someone else to take it. Unless women in general come together and say this is what we deserve to be paid, it is not going to happen."

Bhagyashree further pointed out that there will always be someone willing to accept lower pay. "There will always be someone ready to bargain and take a step back. Whether it's work hours or payment terms, this is a very volatile market," she said.

Pricing in Bollywood

The actress also compared pricing in films to buying a home. "When you work with someone, it's not only about pay, you also need to like working with that person. When you buy a flat, you are ready to pay a little extra for added amenities like a swimming pool. And when you don't need those things, you compromise and pay less. I think it's a business strategy," she explained.

Back in 2023, actress Pervin Dastur, who played Seema in Maine Pyar Kiya, had claimed that Bhagyashree was the highest-paid actor on the film. She reportedly revealed that Bhagyashree was paid Rs 1.5 lakh, while Salman had earlier said he received Rs 75,000 for the same movie.
