Mumbai Police have registered an FIR against actor Imran Khan and others detained during a protest at August Kranti Maidan, held in support of the Cockroach Janta Party's (CJP) demonstration in Delhi. The protest called for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar's resignation amid the controversy surrounding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.
According to IANS, the FIR was registered at Gamdevi Police Station under Sections 223, 126(2), 189(2), 189(3) and 189(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The provisions relate to offences including disobedience to an order, wrongful restraint and unlawful assembly. Police personnel have filed the complaint.
Mumbai Police said more than 400 people were detained during Saturday's demonstration. Imran was among those taken into custody, along with his girlfriend, Lekha Washington, and cousin, Zayn Marie Khan. Both women also shared updates about their detention on social media.
Following his detention, Imran posted a picture of himself inside a police van, accompanying it with a tongue-in-cheek caption, "Apparently I'm going for a drive."
In another video circulating on social media, the Delhi Belly actor was heard greeting police personnel with "Jai Hind". He also spoke about being taken into custody, saying he was unclear about the reason for his detention. "I honestly don't know why I have been brought here. They picked all of us from the streets and asked us to sit in the vans," he said.
Imran further revealed that he and the others were driven around in the police van for approximately two hours before being released. His girlfriend Lekha and cousin Zayn also posted updates from inside the vehicle, documenting their experience.
Before entering the police van, Imran clarified that he was not representing any political organisation and had no specific demands of his own. He said his presence at the protest was simply as a citizen. "Sir, I don't have any demands; I don't have any status to demand anything from people. Nor am I a part of any organisation, so I don't speak as a representative," he said.
The Mumbai demonstration was held in solidarity with the CJP protest in Delhi, which sought Gyanesh Kumar's resignation over concerns surrounding the SIR exercise. The latest police action follows the detention of hundreds of demonstrators in the city.
The FIR names Imran and others in connection with the protest. Further details about the case and the allegations against those detained are awaited.
