Actor and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut has criticised the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) over its protest demanding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar's resignation, describing its leadership as "anti-national forces". Her remarks came after Delhi Police detained thousands of people ahead of the group's planned demonstration at Jantar Mantar on October 10.
Speaking to reporters after arriving in Lucknow, Kangana alleged that the protests were part of an attempt to destabilise the country. The actor was travelling to Ayodhya to offer prayers at the Ram temple when she was asked about the developments in Delhi.
"Look at how people are now exposing these anti-national forces. Leave the police aside, now ordinary people too will catch them and demand answers from them because people have started recognising them," she said.
Kangana, who represents Mandi in the Lok Sabha, also stressed that while efforts to protect the country were important, authorities should ensure that ordinary citizens were not inconvenienced.
The CJP had called for a large-scale demonstration seeking Kumar's resignation over alleged irregularities linked to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The group has raised concerns about alleged wrongful deletions of voters and demanded greater transparency in the revision process.
The planned gathering at Jantar Mantar was met with extensive security arrangements. Delhi Police detained thousands of people across the capital on Saturday, with many released later in the day. The action prevented protesters from reaching the designated demonstration site.
The police action left several parts of the capital heavily restricted as authorities attempted to prevent the demonstration from proceeding. The CJP, described in reports as a satirical political movement, vowed to continue its agitation despite the detentions.
The crackdown also raised legal questions over the restrictions imposed during the security operation. A plea challenging the authorities' actions, including an alleged shutdown of metro and train services, was expected to be heard by the Supreme Court.
The protests have brought renewed attention to the allegations surrounding electoral roll revision and calls for accountability from the Election Commission. However, the claims of irregularities remain allegations raised by the protesters.
Kangana's comments add a political dimension to the confrontation, with the actor condemning the movement's leadership even as the CJP continues to press for Kumar's resignation and greater transparency in the electoral roll revision process.
