Three seasons later, director Gurmmeet Singh brought his hit streaming series to the big screen with Mirzapur: The Movie. It quickly turned into a blockbuster, having reportedly crossed Rs 300 crore worldwide. But what if we told you that the makers were contemplating taking the theatrical route almost eight years ago? Turns out, when the first two episodes of Mirzapur's first season were screened at the MAMI Mumbai Film Festival in 2018, it gave the makers a glimpse of its theatrical potential.

Recalling the episode, Singh told mid-day, "We saw that the audience was hooting, clapping, and enjoying. So, in our subconscious, we felt that this show and story can work on the big screen."

After the Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal, and Divyenndu-led series' second season, producer Ritesh Sidhwani repeatedly suggested taking Mirzapur to theatres. The team, however, struggled to see how it could work until creator Puneet Krishna, in 2024, came up with the idea of creating an offshoot within the first season. The result? "A larger-than-life and an adventurous film," exclaimed the director.

Mirzapur: The Movie gave the audience not only familiar faces, but also new players in Ravi Kishan and Jitendra Kumar. Kishan has been widely praised for his role of a gangster, who is intimidating but also hilariously romantic, even stitching his girlfriend's blouse. "That's Puneet Krishna's writing style. He feels every character needs to be the hero of his own story. Ravi Kishan brought the drama, aura, and charisma to the role," smiled Singh.

With the film becoming one of the year's biggest Hindi grossers, Singh is certain that the franchise will return. "Mirzapur writes our journey, more than us deciding its journey. We need a little more time to decide in what form and shape [it will return]."
