Veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah has questioned the silence of several Bollywood celebrities over the ongoing student protests at Delhi's Jantar Mantar, suggesting that some may be avoiding speaking out because it is more convenient for them. The actor, who recently voiced his support for protesting students, said many prominent personalities have stayed away from commenting on an issue that has gained nationwide attention.

Speaking to The Wire, Shah was asked why several top film stars had not publicly addressed the protests. Responding to the question, he said, "They'll do it when their conscience tells them to. There's a saying: a dog with a bone in its mouth can't bark. As soon as the bone drops out of their mouth, or it breaks their teeth, then they will bark."

When asked whether he believed people were suppressing their conscience because they benefited from staying silent, Shah replied, "Absolutely, yeah," adding that "time will tell" how long such silence continues.

Shah's comments came shortly after he released a video message expressing solidarity with students protesting over alleged irregularities in the NEET examination and demanding accountability from authorities.

In the video, the actor spoke about the alleged police action during the demonstrations and said he was disturbed by the treatment of young protesters. "I sympathise with them. I am emotional, and at the same time, my blood boils seeing how the youth are being tortured," he said.

Addressing the students, Shah urged them to remain determined and continue their fight. "I want to tell all these children not to lose hope. Many people sympathise with you. Many people are with you. Keep fighting," he said.
The actor also warned those in power that their actions would not be forgotten, stating, "Everything shall be remembered."

The protests began over allegations of irregularities in the NEET examination and demands for reforms in India's education system. The movement gained further momentum after educator and environmentalist Sonam Wangchuk joined the protest at Jantar Mantar and began an indefinite hunger strike.

Shah also spoke about the importance of young voices in a democracy, saying students should be allowed to question those in power without fear. He highlighted that movements led by students often reflect wider concerns within society and urged protesters to maintain their focus despite challenges.

The actor's statement has added to the ongoing conversation around celebrity responsibility, public opinion and the role of artists in addressing social issues. The protests continue at Jantar Mantar, with students seeking dialogue with the government over their demands.
