Saiyaara director Mohit Suri clarifies Ranbir Kapoor is not part of his next: 'Genuinely want to work with him'

Filmmaker Mohit Suri had a strong 2025 with the release of his film Saiyaara. The musical romantic drama, which starred newcomers Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, emerged as a massive hit and a surprise success at the box office.

Following the film's success, attention has shifted to Suri's next project. Earlier this year, reports suggested that the director was planning to collaborate with Ranbir Kapoor. However, Suri has denied the claims and put an end to the speculation.

In an interview with Variety India, Suri clarified that Ranbir Kapoor is not part of his next film, though he expressed a desire to work with the actor in the future. He added that Kapoor has followed his career since the beginning.

"Ranbir Kapoor is not in my next film. I genuinely want to work with him and I hope he feels the same way about me. I went to meet him to discuss and intend to work together. Meanwhile, it's been in the news that we are already doing a film together. Ranbir and I know each other as he's been following my career right from the beginning. He's one of the few actors and such a great star who appreciates a film like Awarapan even though it flopped when it was released. He keeps telling me it's one of my best films," the director said.

Earlier reports had claimed that Suri and Ranbir Kapoor were planning to collaborate on a love story set against the backdrop of a gangster drama.

Mohit Suri shares Aditya Chopra's initial reaction to Saiyaara

During a conversation on the podcast The Right Angle with Sonal Kalra (Season 2), Suri recalled producer Aditya Chopra's initial reaction after watching a rough cut of Saiyaara.

"He (Aditya Chopra) was the one who always said, no matter how much it opens with, it's going to do Rs 100 crores. He saw something in the film that's very difficult for a director to see while making it every day, and that's exactly what an experienced producer should do," he shared.

Suri added that Chopra's faith gave him the confidence that the film would succeed at the box office. He also expressed admiration for the producer, revealing that he often revisits Chopra's work to better understand the craft of filmmaking.

During the same conversation, the director thanked fans for their overwhelming love and support, noting that there is no fixed formula for delivering a hit film.
