Siddharth Mahadevan: Being around dad helped me

When you are the son of a legend like my dad, there are comparisons. And when you are compared with an artiste of such high calibre, it helps you work harder," says Siddharth, son of renowned composer-singer Shankar Mahadevan.

The 23-year-old, who has sung hits like Bhaag Milkha Bhaag's Zinda and Kill Dil's Bol Beliya, has a strong foothold as a composer in the Marathi film industry. In a candid chat, he opens up on his equation with his father and exploring acting as a career option.

You haven't done a lot of work in Bollywood over the past two years. Why?
I have been tied up with different projects since the past few months and have been travelling for shows. Hopefully, more songs will come my way now.

Was it easier to make a mark in B-Town because of your father's legacy?
Being around dad helped me get the right exposure. But, it doesn't benefit you all the time. You might get one break, but to sustain, you must be good. Yes, I had access to the right people, but I didn't get a break because of that. Today, there are several factors that determine whether or not your voice will be approved.

You work extensively in the Marathi music industry. How is that different from Bollyood?
The first film I composed music and won an award for was in Marathi. The industry is growing and filmmakers are willing to spend money on making the songs look visually attractive. Bollywood
is more glamorous, but Marathi films are surely getting there.

How often do you jam with your dad at home?
At home, dad and I are like buddies. We chill, cook and watch movies. Often, we start creating a track by putting down melodies. So, impromptu jamming sessions happen.

Do you like performing with him at concerts?
Sharing the stage with dad is a fantastic experience. I'm in awe of what he does on stage. He knows what my comfort zone is. So, he lets me shine through it.

Like other singers, do you also intend to try your hand at acting in films?
I haven't thought of it, but I don't like to close my options. I want to get into making films.
