Jagdeep's funeral: Jaaved Jaaferi, Naved and family bid adieu to the veteran actor

Veteran actor Jagdeep passed away on Wednesday at the age of 81. Jaaved Jaaferi along with family paid their final respects to Jagdeep at the funeral held at Shia Kabrastan, Mazgaon, in Mumbai.

Veteran actor Jagdeep passed away on July 8 (Wednesday) due to age-related health issues. He was 81. He passed away at 8.30 pm at his residence in Bandra. His son Jaaved Jaaferi along with wife were seen arranging for the funeral services. All pictures/Shadab Khan, Suresh Karkera and Yogen Shah

Producer Mehmood Ali, a close family friend, told PTI, "He passed away at 8.30 pm at his residence in Bandra. He was not keeping well due to age-related issues."

Veteran actor Jagdeep was best known for his role of Soorma Bhopali in Ramesh Sippy's blockbuster Sholay (1975), which also starred Dharmendra, Amitabh Bachchan, Hema Malini.

Veteran actor Jagdeep was laid to rest at Shia Kabrastan in Mazgaon, with COVID-19 lockdown restrictions in place. A few family members had come in to pay their respects.

Syed Ishtiaq Ahmed Jafri aka Jagdeep was born on March 29, 1939, in Amritsar. He acted in over 400 films. New-generation Bollywood fans would recall him as Salman Khan's father in Rajkumar Santoshi's Andaaz Apna Apna (1994).

Several Bollywood celebrities including Ajay Devgn, Johny Lever, Anubhav Sinha mourned the loss on social media. They took to their respective Twitter handles to express their condolences.

Jagdeep started his career as a child artist in BR Chopra's 1951 release, Afsana, starring Ashok Kumar, Veena and Pran. As a child artiste, he also worked in the Raj Kapoor-produced Ab Dilli Door Nahin, KA Abbas's Munna, Guru Dutt's Aar Paar, Bimal Roy's Do Bigha Zamin and the AVM-produced Hum Panchi Ek Dal Ke.

Jagdeep, later on, would make a mark with roles in films such as Bhabhi (1957) and Barkha (1959). Jagdeep's golden phase would begin with GP Sippy's 1968 film Brahmachari, starring Shammi Kapoor. His comic role in the film was widely appreciated.

Through the seventies, eighties and the nineties, Jagdeep became a familiar face in Hindi films, essaying the goofy funnyman in film after film.

The late actor is survived by his children, including sons Jaaved Jaaferi and Naved Jafri, who also made their mark in the entertainment industry. Jaaved is a noted actor and dancer.

Jagdeep's son Naved Jafri had hosted the long-running popular dance show, Boogie Woogie. The show was created and directed by him.

Johny Lever was among the few celebrities who came in to pay their respects to veteran actor Jagdeep at his funeral in Mazgaon. Lever took to his Twitter to mourn the loss of Jagdeep and wrote about how he faced the camera for the first time with the actor.

Johny Lever wrote, "My first film & the first time I ever faced the camera, was in the film #yehrishtanatoote with the legend himself #Jagdeep bhai. We will miss you... May his soul rest in peace. Our prayers & deepest condolences to the family. [sic]"

Jaaved Jaaferi 's son Meezan also came in to pay respects to late grandfather Jagdeep at the funeral in Mazgaon.
