Andrew Garfield is once again opening up about what Spider-Man can represent, and his answer remains as inclusive as ever. More than a decade after suggesting that Peter Parker could explore his sexuality, the actor has reaffirmed that he still believes anyone should be able to see themselves beneath the iconic mask.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly ahead of The Uprising, Garfield revisited the comments he made while promoting The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in 2013. At the time, the actor had playfully questioned why Peter's romantic storyline could not involve a man instead of Mary Jane Watson.
Back then, Garfield had asked, "What if MJ is a dude?" before wondering, "Why can't we discover that Peter is exploring his sexuality?" He also questioned, "Why can't he be gay? Why can't he be into boys?"
While the comments were partly made in jest, Garfield later explained that his point was less about changing his particular version of Peter Parker and more about what Spider-Man could represent.
More than 10 years later, his stance has not changed. "It was an exercise in rebellion that I felt passionate about," Garfield said. "I just still believe that anyone can be in that suit."
For the actor, Spider-Man has always been more than a superhero with extraordinary abilities. The character's outsider status and willingness to put himself in danger for others are qualities that can resonate with people regardless of their identity.
Garfield had even jokingly suggested Michael B Jordan as a potential male version of Peter's love interest during the original discussion, though he later made it clear that the idea was not a serious casting pitch.
Garfield's comments come as the Spider-Man universe continues to become increasingly expansive. The animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse have already pushed the idea that there is no single version of the web-slinger, with Miles Morales becoming one of the franchise's most prominent alternate Spider-Men.
Live-action, however, has so far remained centred on heterosexual versions of Peter Parker, portrayed by Tobey Maguire, Garfield and Tom Holland.
Interestingly, Garfield has also recently spoken about what could convince him to return as Spider-Man. Rather than revisiting familiar territory, the actor said he would want a potential comeback to be "very strange" and "completely unconventional."
There is, of course, no indication that Garfield's latest comments signal an upcoming gay Spider-Man project. Instead, they appear to be a reaffirmation of his long-standing belief that the superhero should be open to everyone.
The most recent movie in the Spider-Man universe is the freshly released Spider-Man: Brand New Day, released on July 30, 2026.
