Six years after losing the global box-office crown to Avatar, Avengers: Endgame has reclaimed the top spot. The Marvel blockbuster has once again become the highest-grossing film in history after its latest theatrical re-release pushed its lifetime worldwide earnings past James Cameron's sci-fi epic.
According to Box Office Mojo, Avengers: Endgame has now collected approximately Rs 2,81,337 crore worldwide, narrowly overtaking Avatar, which stands at approximately Rs 2,81,155 crore. The gap between the two films remains slim, making this the latest closely fought box-office battle.
The latest boost came from Avengers: Endgame Encore, which returned to cinemas ahead of Marvel's next major crossover, Avengers: Doomsday. The re-release gave the 2019 blockbuster a fresh theatrical run and added significantly to its already record-breaking haul.
In the US, Endgame Encore opened to USD 26.1 million in its first weekend. Its second weekend saw a drop, with the film adding another USD 4.4 million. Globally, the re-release has earned USD 126 million so far, including USD 36.2 million from North America and USD 89.8 million from international markets.
China has emerged as one of its strongest overseas territories, contributing USD 21.3 million and making the Marvel film the country's biggest non-local release during this run. The re-release has also topped other non-local films in markets including Indonesia, Vietnam, Ecuador and Bolivia.
India has contributed Rs 36.5 crore to the latest run. Other strong markets include Mexico, which has delivered USD 6.1 million, and Brazil, with USD 3.1 million.
This is not the first time Endgame has held the global record. The Anthony and Joe Russo-directed film crossed the finish line ahead of Avatar in 2019, becoming the first movie to surpass Cameron's film. Avatar later returned to the top following a re-release, reclaiming the crown from Marvel.
Now, Endgame is back at No. 1 just months before the next major chapter in the MCU. Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to release on December 18, the same day as Dune: Part Three. With both films expected to draw large audiences, Marvel has already turned its next theatrical showdown into a box-office conversation, even before Doomsday reaches cinemas.
