Marvel Studios has gone to great lengths to keep Sadie Sink's role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day under wraps, but a comment made during the film's premiere may have inadvertently revealed one of its biggest secrets.
During a red carpet interview with streamer Valkyrae, musician Steve Lacy, whose music features in the film, was asked which character he was most excited about without giving away any spoilers. His response quickly caught fans' attention. "You know what? Jean... I like Jean. She's the villain, but there's a reason to her madness," Lacy said.
His remark immediately fuelled speculation that Sink is indeed playing Jean Grey, the iconic X-Men mutant, a theory that has circulated online for months but has never been confirmed by Marvel. The clip spread rapidly across social media, with many fans accusing Lacy of spoiling one of the film's biggest surprises.
Marvel has so far avoided revealing Sink's character in trailers, posters and interviews, adding to the mystery surrounding her role in the Tom Holland-led superhero film.
While the internet debated whether Lacy had let the secret slip, film critic Siddhant Adlakha suggested the revelation may not be as significant as fans believe.
Reacting to the viral clip, he wrote on X, "Apparently someone 'spoiled' this on the red carpet tonight. Don't worry, it's not a spoiler, I promise. Just a normal part of the film. But I'm forced to be vague because the studio is marketing it as a major twist, when anyone who could possibly care has already figured it out."
He further added, "Definitely wouldn't call it a mystery - it's not a piece of information anyone's chasing, and learning it makes no difference to anyone or anything in the film. If anything, the mystery involves motive, not 'this is someone you recognise from the comics/other films.'"
The bigger question may not be who Sadie Sink is playing but why Jean Grey appears to be positioned as an antagonist in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. With Marvel still remaining silent on the matter, fans will likely have to wait until they watch the film to uncover the full story behind the mysterious new character and her connection to Peter Parker's next adventure.
