Sony Pictures has unveiled the first trailer for Jumanji: Open World, the third instalment in the rebooted Jumanji franchise. The film reunites Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillan for another action-packed adventure, but this time with a major twist, the game has escaped into the real world. Blending comedy, fantasy and high-stakes action, the trailer promises a fresh take on the beloved franchise while bringing back the body-swap humour that made the previous films global hits.
The latest instalment picks up with Spencer and his friends once again crossing paths with the magical game, only to realise that the rules have changed dramatically.
The trailer opens with Spencer (Alex Wolff) and his friends arriving at Nora's, where they unexpectedly encounter Dr Smolder Bravestone, played by Dwayne Johnson. Soon after, Kevin Hart's Franklin "Mouse" Finbar, Jack Black's Professor Sheldon Oberon and Karen Gillan's Ruby Roundhouse also make their return.
Unlike the previous films, where the teenagers were transported into the game, Jumanji: Open World flips the concept by bringing the game's characters into the real world. Spencer explains that the avatars are trapped in "demo mode," creating confusion and chaos as they struggle to understand life outside the game.
The trailer also delivers several comedic moments, including Bravestone suddenly speaking with a Spanish accent, before the group is forced back into the game, where yet another unexpected twist changes the identities of the playable characters.
Alongside the core cast, the film also welcomes back Danny DeVito, Nick Jonas, Awkwafina, Marin Hinkle, Bebe Neuwirth, Lamorne Morris and Rhys Darby. New additions Dan Hildebrand and Jack Jewkes join the ensemble, adding fresh faces to the franchise.
Directed by Jake Kasdan, Jumanji: Open World is written by Jeff Pinkner, Scott Rosenberg and Kasdan. The film is produced by Matt Tolmach, Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia and Kasdan.
The new instalment follows the massive success of Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and Jumanji: The Next Level, which collectively earned more than USD 1.7 billion at the global box office. Together, the films successfully reinvented the beloved 1995 classic starring the late Robin Williams while introducing the fantasy adventure to a new generation of audiences.
Originally slated for a December release, Jumanji: Open World is now set to arrive in theatres on Christmas, promising another round of laughs, action and game-changing surprises.
