26-year-old filmmaker Curry Barker has created a splash with his recent horror film Obsession, which has left everyone obsessed. The film has turned out to be a breakthrough hit, achieving exceptional box office numbers, despite being made on little budget. While soaking in the success of his film, he is already looking ahead to his next project, a sequel to Obsession.
The 26-year-old recently revealed his upcoming horror feature titled Anything But Ghosts, which he said exists in the same universe as Obsession, adding that it will create a direct link between the two films.
Speaking during a recent post-screening QandA for Obsession, Barker confirmed that his new film will reference events from his current release, including the fate of one of its central characters.
Barker shared, "There's like a news article thing in the next movie where you hear a news anchor talking about a triple homicide by a woman," hinting at how the connection with the first part will be woven into the story of the sequel.
The reference seemingly points to the climactic events of Obsession. In the first film, Nikki, played by Inde Navarrette, is driven to deadly violence after Bear, portrayed by Michael Johnston, breaks the 'One Wish Willow' hoping she would fall in love with him. In the climax scene, Bear's spell is eventually broken after his death, but in the meantime, Nikki has already killed her friends Sarah and Ian, played by Megan Lawless and Cooper Tomlinson.
Barker's next feature, Anything But Ghosts, reportedly follows two con artists who pose as paranormal investigators, and they find themselves confronting a genuine supernatural threat. The film marks Barker's latest collaboration with Blumhouse Productions and Atomic Monster.
Barker has co-written the screenplay of the film with Tomlinson. Additionally, he is also expected to direct and star in the film. The cast of Anything but Ghosts includes Aaron Paul, Bryce Dallas Howard and Violet McGraw.
While plot details largely remain under wraps, Barker, in his latest comment, has confirmed that Anything But Ghosts will not be a standalone story. It will expand the world introduced in Obsession, with at least one direct reference that will connect the two films.
