Family films continue to reign supreme at the box office. Audiences flocked to see the animated film Rio, which debuted in first place with nearly $40 million in ticket sales, according to Hollywood.com.
The movie, which features the voice talents of Jesse Eisenberg and Anne Hathaway, earned $10 million more than movie analysts predicted. Wes Craven's Scream 4 -- starring Neve Campbell, David Arquette, Courteney Cox and Emma Roberts -- wasn't as well-received.
It debuted at #2 with $19.2 million (about $2 million below expectations). The Arthur Brand and James Marsden film Hop, which topped the box office for two consecutive weeks, fell to #3 with $11.2 million. Rounding out the Top 5 were Soul Surfer (No 4, $7.4 million) and Hanna (#5, $7.3 million).
