Indian audiences will soon get a chance to experience the story of one of the culinary world's most influential figures on the big screen. TONY, a biographical comedy-drama inspired by the early life of celebrated chef, author and television personality Anthony Bourdain, is set to release in cinemas across India on August 21.

TONY shows Anthony Bourdain's life during his youth

Rather than chronicling Bourdain's global fame, the film revisits a defining chapter from his youth, long before he became an internationally recognised food icon. Set over the course of a transformative summer, TONY follows a young Anthony as he works in the demanding environment of a bustling restaurant kitchen, where personal ambition, unexpected friendships and everyday challenges begin shaping the man he would eventually become.

The film promises a coming-of-age story that blends humour, emotion and the relentless pace of professional kitchens. While cooking remains central to the narrative, the story goes beyond food to explore themes of self-discovery, resilience and finding purpose. Through the highs and lows of kitchen life, the young Anthony learns lessons that ultimately influence both his career and outlook on life.

Directed by Matt Johnson, TONY aims to capture the energy and unpredictability of restaurant culture while offering a more intimate look at Bourdain's formative years. Instead of presenting a conventional celebrity biopic, the film focuses on the experiences that shaped his identity before he became a bestselling author and beloved television personality.

Cast takes centre stage

Leading the film is Dominic Sessa, who steps into the role of the young Anthony Bourdain. The ensemble also features Emilia Jones, Dagmara Dominczyk, Rich Sommers and Stavros Halkias, with Leo Woodall and Antonio Banderas appearing in pivotal roles.

The trailer offers glimpses of a fast-paced kitchen environment filled with humour, pressure and heartfelt moments, hinting at a story that balances entertainment with emotional depth. While Bourdain's love for food remains at the heart of the narrative, the film also explores the relationships and experiences that helped shape his future.

Over the years, Anthony Bourdain became a global cultural figure through his bestselling books and acclaimed travel and food series, earning admiration for his candid storytelling and curiosity about people and cultures. TONY seeks to revisit the chapter before that extraordinary journey began, offering audiences an intimate portrait of the experiences that laid the foundation for his remarkable life.

The film arrives in Indian cinemas on August 21, giving fans an opportunity to revisit the origins of one of the world's most influential culinary voices.
