US President Donald Trump made a lewd remark about rapper Nicki Minaj's appearance during a rally in Michigan, praising her backside before apologising for going off-topic. The comment drew cheers from the audience, with Trump later clarifying that he hoped the rapper had not been offended.
Speaking at McMorran Place Arena in Port Huron on October 25, Trump turned his attention to Minaj while addressing the crowd. "By the way, I looked at one hell of a beautiful a'' before, Nicki Minaj," he said.
He followed the remark with, "That's hard to miss," before asking the rapper to stand up. As the audience cheered, Trump acknowledged that he had strayed from his speech. "Okay, I'm going to get back to my... I'm sorry," he said, before adding, "I hope Nicki wasn't insulted, but we love Nicki. She's been with us for a long time." He had also previously praised Nicki's skin at a White House event.
Minaj, who has emerged as a prominent celebrity supporter of the US President, was present at the rally alongside Trump. The two had travelled to Port Huron aboard Air Force One.
Trump's remarks come months after Minaj publicly declared her support for his administration. Speaking at an event in Washington on January 28 to promote the administration's proposed investment accounts for children, the rapper described herself as one of his biggest supporters. "I am probably the president's No. 1 fan, and that's not going to change," she said.
Minaj also maintained that criticism would only strengthen her backing for Trump. "The hate or what people have to say, it does not affect me at all. It actually motivates me to support him more," she said. She further expressed support for the President and his supporters, saying they would not allow him to be bullied through what she described as smear campaigns.
Her public endorsement marks a shift from her earlier criticism of Trump. She has since become an outspoken supporter of his administration, publicly praising his policies and achievements.
Following the Michigan rally, White House Communications Director Steven Cheung shared a video of Minaj praising Trump's foreign policy aboard Air Force One. He jokingly suggested that she could become the next White House press secretary, a suggestion also endorsed by the official Trump War Room account.
