Mohanlal's Drishyam 3 has cleared censorship formalities with minimal modifications across multiple language versions. While the Malayalam, Tamil, and Kannada versions received a U/A 16+ certificate without cuts, the Telugu version was asked to mute an expletive word. The makers have also confirmed the film's runtime and updated theatrical release date.
According to a report in Bollywood Hungama, The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) passed all versions of Drishyam 3 from the Thiruvananthapuram office with a U/A 16+ certificate. Thankfully, no visual or audio cuts have been ordered in the Malayalam, Tamil, and Kannada versions. In the original Malayalam version, the makers were asked to add a static warning card about the dangers of smoking. Meanwhile, in the dubbed Kannada version, the makers were instructed to add a similar static warning card about the ill effects of alcohol consumption. Finally, in the Telugu version, the makers were asked to mute the expletive âf''k' in the second half of the film.
The length of the film, as mentioned on the censor certificates, is 159.05 minutes. In short, Drishyam 3 is 2 hours, 39 minutes, and 5 seconds long.
The film's release, which was scheduled for April 2 this year, had to be postponed due to the tense situation persisting in the Gulf. The film is now slated for release on May 21.
Mohanlal had completed shooting for his portions of the film in December last year. A video clip of the actor cutting a cake in front of the entire unit to celebrate the completion of his portions had gone viral.
"The film focuses on what happens in Georgekutty's life after four-and-a-half years. That is the crux of the story," director Jeetu Joseph explained.
The Drishyam franchise has achieved cult status in Indian cinema for its gripping storytelling, intricate suspense, and Mohanlal's acclaimed performance. The first film, released in 2013, set new benchmarks in Malayalam cinema, while its sequel, released in 2021, drew record-breaking viewership both in theatres and on streaming platforms.
The makers recently clarified that the Hindi version of Drishyam 3, starring Ajay Devgn, will be different from the Malayalam version.
