Vijay Sethupathi's 2024 Tamil hit Maharaja is officially getting a Hollywood remake, marking a major milestone for the film. The producers confirmed the news on Wednesday, while reports have suggested that Matthew McConaughey could headline the adaptation.
On Wednesday, the producers of Maharaja confirmed the Hollywood remake on their social media. "A HISTORIC MILESTONE! #Maharaja becomes the first Tamil film to be made in Hollywood by a major studio," they wrote, making the news official.
This week, several social media pages have cited sources and claimed that Matthew McConaughey will star in the Hollywood remake of Maharaja. One of the film's producers, Sudhan Sundaram, told TOI that Maharaja's Rs 91 crore success in China prompted an agency to approach them for the remake rights. He also mentioned that an A-list star is lined up for the remake, which will go on floors next year. When asked about Matthew, he told the publication, "Maybe McConaughey is one of the stars they are talking to, but only the agency will be able to confirm."
Directed by Nithilan Swaminathan, Maharaja follows a barber whose complaint about a missing dustbin takes him to a police station. What sounds like a bizarrely simple problem soon opens the door to a much darker story. Vijay Sethupathi played the central character, while Anurag Kashyap took on the role of the antagonist. Released in 2024, Maharaja earned Rs 91.65 crore at the box office. The film also stars Sachana Namidass, Natty Subramaniam, Mamta Mohandas and others. To note, Maharaja was Vijay's 50th film of his career.
He next has Baththa in his pipeline. The makers have now released a glimpse video from the film titled âThe World of Baththa', much to the delight of fans and film buffs. In the film, Vijay plays a ruffian who fears none.
He will next collaborate with Mani Ratnam for the romantic drama Inji Vellam, which also stars Sai Pallavi. The first-look poster of the film instantly grabs attention, with Vijay Sethupathi and Sai Pallavi sharing an affectionate embrace. He is currently hosting Bigg Boss Tamil 10.
