Television actress Mahhi Vij has opened up about her decision to refuse alimony from her former husband, Jay Bhanushali, during an emotional moment on Bigg Boss 20. The actress broke down while discussing her financial independence, her responsibilities as a mother and why she did not want to accept money earned by her former partner. Her comments have brought renewed attention to the couple's separation and Mahhi's views on financial independence after marriage.
In a recent episode of Bigg Boss 20, Mahhi spoke about her separation from Jay and revealed that she had refused both alimony and maintenance, even when a judge reportedly encouraged her to reconsider. "I have not taken even a single rupee of alimony," she said, explaining that she wanted to build her life on her own terms.
Mahhi acknowledged that Jay had encouraged her to step out, work and focus on her own life instead of staying at home. However, she said she could not bring herself to accept his money because she believed he had worked hard to earn it. According to Times of India, Mahhi became emotional as she recalled being asked repeatedly by the judge to reconsider her decision.
Explaining her thinking, Mahhi said Jay had worked for long hours to earn his money. She also clarified that her decision was not because he had refused to support her financially.
"He has worked for 16-16 hours," she said, adding that Jay had made his resources available to her. Still, she wanted to secure her children's future through her own efforts.
The actress has previously spoken about financial independence. In November 2025, Hindustan Times reported that Mahhi had rejected rumours that she was demanding Rs 5 crore in alimony and had spoken about the importance of women becoming financially independent.
Mahhi and Jay announced their separation in January 2026 after more than a decade together. In their joint statement, they said they would continue to support each other and prioritise their children, Tara, Khushi and Rajveer. Mahhi's latest comments offer a glimpse into her personal approach to rebuilding life after separation. While her decision reflects her own circumstances and beliefs, her story has also reopened a wider conversation about financial independence, support after separation and the choices women make for themselves and their families.
